Implant-Supported Dentures
As the name suggests, implant-supported dentures are attached to implants in the jawbone that extend outward from the gums. A dentist/oral surgeon surgically fits these implants, and they remain in place. An advantage to implant-supported dentures is that they are more stable than other types of dentures – especially in the lower jaw, where conventional dentures are most likely to slip out of place. The implants are usually fitted at the front of the jaw.
Not only do implant-supported dentures look and function just like regular, natural teeth, but they are more comfortable and stable than regular dentures, are designed to be long-lasting, and allow you to maintain your regular biting and chewing ability.
This option is also often more aesthetic and easier to maintain long-term.
And because implants replace some of your tooth roots, your bone will be better preserved than with conventional dentures.
Candidates for implant-supported dentures should have healthy gums, good oral care routines and sufficient jawbone, though bone can be rebuilt to a certain degree if needed.
